Listening in on Conversations
Show posters lined the walls where we walked in. Crew in black t-shirts ushered us to our seats. There was a hush and 1a.m. Production's brand new show for Christmas 2007, 'Conversations with Cathryn' began.
'Conversations with Cathryn' with the episode themed 'The Gift' was conceived as a multimedia talk show with live studio recording, which allowed audiences to dive into the highs and lows of 3 real life stories.
We've never been to a live studio recording and this was as close to the real thing as we could get. They had the whole works - camera crew, lights, stage manager, even the 'Silence' 'Applause' and 'On Air' light boxes – which got the audiences following along heartily.
Cathryn Loh was the host and she kept the conversation lively both on stage with her guests as well as with the audience. Her first guest was Winifred Heron, who shared her story of losing a baby through a miscarriage and the journey of adopting her son, Matthew. She thought she was cursed. She was never going to be a mother when Matthew came out blue. Yet another baby was going to die in her hands. What does one do when there is nothing else one can do? One can only embrace the gift of love from the Heavenly Father and let Him breathe life into dying dreams.
The next invited guest was Dawson Sim who grew up with a father who gambled his wages away. It came to a point that Dawson and family moved out. For the next 10 years, Dawson never spoke to his Dad. But Dawson began to experience the gift of peace that changed his life tremendously when he came down to KL to study. He received Jesus as His Saviour, encountered Him in a powerful way and forgiveness for his Dad flooded his heart. He then made the first move to send his Dad a Father's Day card, and that began to change everything.
The last guest Cathryn chatted with was Kelvin Lim who suffered from depression for 7 long years. He openly talked about his divorce and the subsequent climb out of the dark pit. By believing and activating God's promises in his life, he now walks free, without medication. He found the gift of hope that propels him into greater dreams.
Let these 3 real life stories inspire you all over again as you explore this site. Or relive them with our exclusive ‘Conversations with Cathryn – The Gift’ DVD at only RM20. Interview 1: Winifred, Tim & Matthew Prescott Heron
After her first miscarriage, Wini was comforted by God through a vision of her baby dancing in heaven. She knew immediately that she would hold her baby when she goes to heaven.A difficult season of barrenness followed. Wini wept whenever she heard of others getting pregnant. She felt that God had singled her out.
When there was an open door for them to adopt a baby, they were overjoyed.
But eight months into the pregnancy, the mother of their baby developed hypertension complications. During delivery, the baby was detached from the placenta. The baby came out blue and limp, neither crying nor moving.
Risks of death or severe brain damage were high. There was nothing Wini could do except singing the song about God being the Savior… He can move the mountain and He is mighty to save! Moments later, the baby started to cry and breathe. The doctor was dumbfounded as he revealed a perfect APGAR score for the baby.
Today, Matthew Prescott Heron is a healthy 5-month old baby. Their application for custody of Matthew has been approved with minimal hassle. The greatest gift for Wini and Tim is to discover God’s amazing love through it all.
Interview 2: Dawson Sim
Growing up, Dawson had always not been able to relate with his father. He was afraid of him, but eventually, that fear became hatred and a rift grew between them. Since coming to Kuala Lumpur, Dawson had never made any effort to contact his father.
In 2004, Dawson became a Christian and was invited to attend Victory Weekend.
During one of the worship time, his father suddenly came to his mind.
Dawson knew he needed to forgive his father and let go of the years of hatred and bitterness. He wept uncontrollably and received prayers.
After that experience at Victory Weekend, Dawson decided to send his father a Father’s Day card. To his surprise, he received a birthday card from his father the following week, with a letter attached. His father had written to ask for forgiveness. Dawson was so moved that he called his father – after a 10-year silence. They spoke at length that day and consistently after that.
Last Chinese New Year, Dawson finally met up with his father. While he looked aged significantly, he remained pretty much the same.
But now, with the new found peace, Dawson felt empowered to love his father.
Filled with compassion, Dawson is determined to help and care for his father. Dawson’s ultimate gift would be to see his entire family reconciled to his father.
Interview 3: Kelvin Lim
After completing an online questionnaire for depression, Kelvin was advised to visit a psychiatrist for further assessment. He was diagnosed to suffer from chronic depression by the psychiatrist. This condition was triggered by his divorce and had prevailed for the past 7 years.
When his wife left him for another man, Kelvin struggled with 2 major questions - was he good enough as a husband and how was he going to be a good father to his then 2-year old daughter.
In his depression, Kelvin had no motivation to wake up or even go through the day. He did not care if he lost his job, or depleted his finances. His business, relationships with his daughter and others were greatly affected.
Kelvin didn’t want a life of dependency on anti-depressant. He decided to take a different journey towards recovery. Looking within the Bible, he found Isaiah 61:1-2. Kelvin believed wholeheartedly that God will heal him and give him a favorable year. This faith activated the power of God’s word and promises.
Progressively, Kelvin’s condition began to improve. His mind became clear and he felt free to live life again. He now has hope to fulfill his many God-given dreams.
In less than 2 years, Kelvin wrote many songs and produced 2 albums.
